Basilica of St. Francis

The heart of the city is undoubtedly the Basilica of St. Francis, one of the most important places of Christianity and one of the most extraordinary artistic monuments in Italy. Even those who are not religious are struck by the atmosphere inside. The Lower Basilica is recollected, almost mystical, with soft lighting and medieval frescoes telling the saint's life story. The Upper Basilica, on the other hand, is bright and monumental, famous for Giotto's frescoes that still seem very modern in their intensity and realism.

Town Hall Square

Here the Middle Ages meet everyday life: there are small cafes, wine bars, typical restaurants and the amazing Temple of Minerva, a perfectly preserved ancient Roman temple that is now part of a church. In the evening the square changes its face, slowly emptying itself of visitors and becoming one of the most pleasant places to stop for an aperitif or an outdoor dinner.

Basilica of St. Clare

On the other side of town is the Basilica of Santa Chiara, simpler than that of San Francesco but very elegant and bright. From here there is one of the most beautiful views of the entire Umbrian valley, especially at sunset, when the light makes everything golden. Just above the town, however, is the Rocca Maggiore, the great medieval fortress that dominates Assisi from above.

Don't get lost.

Spello: probably the most romantic village in Umbria. Its narrow streets are decorated with flowers everywhere and every corner seems designed to be photographed.

Rasiglia: a tiny village crisscrossed by streams and small waterfalls that have earned it the nickname "Venice of Umbria."
